In this workshop participants will explore a dozen different felting techniques to create various items that can be utilised to adorn the wearer.  Think stunning neckpieces, individual brooches, unique earrings, buttons and headwear for race days/formal occasions, etc. There are so many different techniques to explore for the complete novice or an experienced Felter.

  • Day one will be spent exploring the various techniques to create the components for your ‘Adorn’ pieces. You will create balls, various interesting beads, geodes, cords, flowers and statement features using fibre, pre-felt and embellishments. We will explore different techniques such as ‘Shibori’, Geode twists and use various resists.
  • Day two will be spent continuing to make the components and then assembling your creations into self directed finished pieces.

This is a relaxed workshop, with plenty of comfortable felting that can be accomplished mostly sitting down.

A Kit will be available for purchase at $35.00 and individual items in the kit will be available for sale as experienced felters may already have some kit items at their disposal.

Tutor will also have loan and consumable items necessary for use during the workshop. E.g. Soap solution, bubble wrap, pool noodles, various resist materials, watering pears, rubber fulling mats, small plastic tubs, towels, spline, needles, wash bags, etc.

About Rae

Rae’s love of art and textiles has been a life long interest, from sewing her first garment at eight years of age to designing and making her own wedding dress, there has always been a connection with textiles and design.

​She has studied photography, life drawing, painting, interior design, ceramics, graphic design and Fine Arts at University. Rae discovered felting fourteen years ago and since then has experimented and researched felt making, exploring new and different techniques and textural directions.

She prefers working with natural products such as fine merino wool, alpaca and silk and is on a constant quest to find beautiful and unique yarns to use as embellishments in her artworks.

“Everyone has a guilty pleasure – mine is possessing beautiful yarns. I must have them like some people must have shoes!”

Rae lives Cooranbong, Lake Macquarie District north of Sydney, Australia and her art studio backs onto a natural bushland reserve. She admits to spending too much time on her studio verandah, drinking tea, planning her next artwork and enjoying her surroundings.

Rae has exhibited her work through solo and group exhibitions in galleries through out Australia. Her artworks are held in collections throughout Australia and Internationally.

Rae has featured in Season 4, Ep 4 of the international arts television program, Put Some Colour in Your Life.

What to Bring

Student Requirements List

To Bring:

  • 1 square metre of pre-felt (in 3 complementary colours e.g. approx. 30
    cm each colour)
  • Wool Roving in several complementary colours (approx. 50 – 100 grams)
    17 – 23 micron or less
  • Small quantity of silk hankies or dyed silk fibre for embellishments
  • Dry felting needle and sponge (or dry needle felting brush/dry needle
    felting punch)
  • Couple of old towels
  • Clean empty ice-cream container, bowl or small bucket (water
    container)
  • Soap Solution or wool friendly soap (olive oil, goat’s milk, lux soap
    flakes)
  • Watering pear (or clean empty plastic milk bottle with a few holes
    punched into the lid)
  • Needle and very strong thread (upholstery thread is best – available at
    Spotlight)
  • Length of bubble wrap (approx. 100 cm x 70 cm – no need to go larger).
  • 1/2 Pool noodle or 1/2 boom stick to use as a roller
  • Pair of small scissors (embroidery scissors are great)
  • Optional: Pen & notebook, some printed notes will be provided

Essential:

  • You must wear closed-toe shoes (no thongs or sandals)
  • Apron, protective clothes or old clothes

Materials fee $15 – payable directly to your tutor.

Your Tutor will provide:

  • Floristry wire, jewellery findings (brooch back, earring wires)
  • hand-dyed silk fabric
  • various resist materials, use of loan items & consumables, embellishment materials, some printed notes.

Optional Kit $35

  • 1 square metre of Pre-felt (in 3 complimentary colours i.e. 30cm+ of each colour) $20.00
  • 50 grams of wool roving in several colours ($5.00)
  • Hand dyed silk fibre (Hankies) for embellishments ($5.00)
