Suitable for All Skill Levels, ages 16+

Achieve beautiful designs from folding, clamping, binding, stitching and manipulating fabrics and paper then dipping them into a variety of dye vats – including the classic favourite, indigo.

  • Sam will demonstrate some simple techniques then you can experiment with your own ideas.
  • Indigo and natural dyes work best on natural materials such as silk, wool and cotton.
  • Sam will provide indigo blue vats in two tones, and 2-3 hot vats – one will be for steam-setting prints from materials such as leaves, onion skins and flowers.
  • Sam will offer plenty of fabrics and paper for sale, including silk scarves that you can wear home!

If you want to bring some of your own ‘stash’, please do! Small lengths of fabric, skeins of yarn, a cotton shirt to “upcycle”, or lovely papers such as cotton rag or mulberry papers – natural materials are best!

There will be plenty of “tools” such as string, clamps, arashi poles and other materials that you need to create your designs. Sam will guide you in how to use these items to create unique designs.

This is a two-day workshop, so that you have plenty of time to try the different vats and techniques, and perhaps try some more complex dyeing on the second day.
